What Exactly Is Sugar Waxing?

Most women are really concerned about hair removal. Shaving and waxing are the two most common techniques used to remove hair. There is also laser hair removal, but this is far more expensive and painful. Waxing isn’t exactly a walk in the park, but it’s much faster and still not quite as painful as laser treatment.

You might be surprised to learn that there is a new alternative on the scene known as sugaring or sugar waxing. Sugaring has actually been around for several hundred years, but it’s only recently making its way to America and it’s rapidly becoming the most popular hair removal option. It delivers the same long term results as waxing, but it’s more subtle and less painful.

Where Does The Name Come From?

Sugaring gets its name from the ingredients used to create the wax. These are the same ingredients you might find in a delicious pastry or desert snack: lemon, sugar, and water. It’s so very simple, yet these three ingredients create a type of paste that is very effective at removing hair. Professional salons might add a few more ingredients to improve the results, but it’s entirely possible to make the sugaring paste at home using only those ingredients.

How Does Sugar Waxing Work?

Sugaring can be categorized into three different groups and the option ingredients used are what makes the difference. There is a sugar gel, paste, and a wax. Most professional salons create and use the wax because it’s the most effective at quickly removing the hair. One specific spa, Waxing by Celeste, a San Diego Brazilian wax specialist salon, says sugar wax is more gently, less painful, and natural and that is why many people prefer to use sugar wax.

Aside from the ingredients used, the actual application and hair removal process is almost exactly the same. The waxer starts by applying a base level of powder, usually talcum powder, to protect the skin. The powder prevents the wax from pulling on the skin. The great thing about sugaring with gel or paste is that it doesn’t stick or pull on the skin. However, the extra ingredients used to make it a wax means it can potentially stick to the skin, so the powder is necessary in this case.

From there, the wax is applied to the hair and then quickly removed using porous cloth just as with a traditional waxing hair removal. The wax doesn’t need to be as hot and feels a lot different than a standard wax. This is because the ingredients also work as a lubricant. When the cloth is pulled, the hairs are more lubricated so they come out easier and with less pain.

Is It Right For You?

If you’ve ever had a standard waxing and liked the results, then you’ll definitely love a sugar waxing. It has all of the benefits of a normal bikini wax, but it’s more gentle on the skin. Find a local Brazilian wax spa who offer sugar wax to get the best results.
